Progress Stories

1) Music Development in Child with NLD

Background:
A young toddler exhibits delayed language development and poor social interaction, resulting in a decision to homeschool the boy for first and second grades. The mother observes that the child imitates various sounds in the environment--such as bird calls. While home schooled, the child shows significant reading progress through phonics and Spalding's Writing Road to Reading.

Music:
In conjunction with home schooling, the mother finds a music teacher to instruct her son in clarinet at age 5. Due to the child's size, the teacher only uses the mouthpiece and a single section of the instrument. Parent observes the child quickly adapts to the instrument, using it as a means of personal communication: "It's like he finally found a way to express himself." Child shows remarkable progress and talent. His musical talent helps him negotiate difficult 7th and 8th grade transitions in a school for the learning disabled and then back into a parochial school setting, where the child happily participates in an extensive music program.
